The BBC 4tech team came into the Markco Media Office in London Bridge today to film the offices and interview some of the staff at MyVoucherCodes about their job roles and online marketing, we made a small segment on how to rank well in search engines. The picture that is featured (BBC Filming London Bridge) in this post is the view that we are lucky enough to walk past every day on our way to and from work!

The BBC set us a challenge if we can get this image ranking in google within 1 week in the image search, should be quite easy, they followed an example of the points we told them about search engines optimisation and wanted to show the user a real example of it in action.

HELP: So if anyone is reading this, please link to this article or the image below.

Stephen Catlin named as Ernst & Young UK Entrepreneur of the Year 2011

London, 4 October 2011 – Stephen Catlin, Chief Executive of international insurer Catlin Group, was named Ernst &Young UK Entrepreneur Of The Year in London last night.

Sponsored by Credit Suisse, hosted by Fiona Bruce and attended by Business Secretary, Vince Cable, the awards ceremony was held at The Park Lane Hilton Hotel. Catlin competed with 42 other business leaders from companies across the UK including Nails Inc, Adconion Media Group, The Mountain Group and Wonga.com.

Starting in 1984 with two people, £25,000 of capital and £25,000 of loans in the Lloyds of London market, under Catlin the company grew to become a global insurance player with a turnover of £2.6billion operating in 52 offices in 22 countries employing more than 1600 staff.

Premier position in sector where UK continues to lead the world

The independent judges said Catlin’s drive and vision helped put the company in a ‘premier position in a sector where the UK continues to lead the world.’ They praised Catlin’s vision for helping the company grow organically and globally through nurturing expert talent, and is now ‘considered in the industry as the one to be measured against.’

The judges praised strategic moves such as the 2006 acquisition of rival Wellington, which alongside geographic expansion, had seen growth in a period after hurricane Katrina when many insurers incurred major losses. The firm also sponsors the Catlin Arctic Survey to increase scientific knowledge of environmental changes and catastrophes.

Richard Hall, UK Entrepreneur of the Year Leader, said: “Stephen built his company in London but showed innovation and vision in exporting his brand across the globe. While traditional Lloyd’s companies had never set up operations outside of that market, Stephen recognised the competitive advantage of global expansion including the US, Asia, Europe and Canada. It is testament to his instinct that his company, while operating in a sector buffeted by recent catastrophes and disasters, is a global leader making billions and looking to further expand into China, India and Latin America.”

Catlin will now go on to compete globally with more than 50 other country finalists at the Ernst &Young World Entrepreneur of The Year awards in Monte Carlo next year.

Steve Varley Ernst &Young UK &Ireland Managing Partner said: “During these tough economic times, the crucial role of entrepreneurs cannot be overstated. This year’s winners and finalists are responsible for combined revenue of £7 billion and achieved 20% employment growth over the last year, despite the continuing economic challenges. It is their determination, innovation, entrepreneurship and extraordinary export success that need to be celebrated and emulated in order to create success and wider growth for the UK.”

Business Secretary Vince Cable said: “Enterprise is the lifeblood of our economy and the people represented in this competition show just how much British entrepreneurs can achieve.

In government, we are working to create an environment that helps new businesses flourish and the entrepreneurs nominated for these awards are a shining example of the business success we want this country to be known for around the world.”

Richard Harpin, Chairman of the Judges called it an ‘exceptional award for an exceptional talent’. He said Robertson expects for the company to be debt free in the next 12 months with a record order book.

Below is a feature from GrowingBusiness for their annual young guns award.

Mark PearsonMark Pearson

At the tender age of 31, Mark Pearson has achieved more than most entrepreneurs manage in a life-time. The former chef has created Britain’s biggest voucher and deals network, and framed an extraordinarily successful business model. His business, My Voucher Codes, is currently achieving profit margins of more than 90% on £10m turnover, and earnings are forecast to rise by over 50% next year.

To cap it all, Pearson has managed to fund every penny of expenditure himself, and thus kept 100% of the equity. Unsurprisingly he is now earning widespread renown, having been a Secret Millionaire on Channel 4 and recently been recognised as nationwide winner of the prestigious Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year awards, as emerging entrepreneur of the year 2011 in addition to Young Guns Top Gun Awards 2011.

Secret Millionaire claims top prize at Young Guns Awards

Secret Millionaire Mark Pearson, the founder of MyVoucherCodes, has claimed the coveted ‘Top Gun’ prize at the 2011 Growing Business Young Guns awards, which recognise Britain’s top entrepreneurs aged 35 or under.

Mark Pearson Mark Peason Award

Pearson, 31, received the haysmacintyre Top Gun title at the awards, which are co-sponsored by law firm Farrer & Co and accountancy group haysmacintyre. Held at London’s Kensington Roof Gardens, the event drew more than 50 of Britain’s top young business owners, including those that have been named Young Guns in the past eight years since the awards launched.

The award was conferred in recognition of the continued success of Pearson’s discount voucher sites business Markco Media, of which MyVoucherCodes.co.uk is the leading brand. The company recorded profits of £9.3m in the last financial year, at an astonishing margin of more than 90%, and is expanding rapidly overseas.

Less than five years after its inception, the company is now operational in 12 countries, and planning to increase its current turnover of £10m by more 50% for the next year-end. On receiving his award, Pearson said: “Being named as one of Growing Business’ Young Guns is a great honour. Some fantastic entrepreneurs and companies have come before me and my hope is to continue growing and building on the success of the company – success which would not have been possible without the help, support and enthusiasm of my gifted team members.

“My ethos has always been work hard first, celebrate later and to be named amongst this year’s best young talent is definitely cause for celebration in my book!”

Managing Partner at haysmacintyre, Simon Wilks, said of Markco Media’s Mark Pearson:

“As supporters of the Young Guns awards for the last five years we have seen the calibre of entrant improve each year and 2011 was no exception. This year the haysmacintyre Top Gun Award went to Mark Pearson of Markco Media who stood out due to the hugely successful business model he has implemented which has resulted in rapid growth and a highly profitable company.”

Pearson beat off stiff competition from a host of top young entrepreneurs, including Ross Williams, whose online dating business Global Personals is approaching £20m turnover, and David Excell, whose ground-breaking behavioural modelling company, Featurespace, is on course to achieve 300% growth this financial year.

Other notable entrants included Charlie Walker, founder of Vivid Resourcing, the UK’s third-fastest growing recruitment company; Simon Best, creator of international DIY web building company BaseKit; and Emma Sinclair, who has revolutionised the car parking sector with her holistic management company, Target Parking.

The event also attracted a number of distinguished former winners, including Barry Houlihan, of Mobile Interactive Group, who secured this year’s ‘Golden Gun’ award, sponsored by Farrer & Co. – which recognises the outstanding achievements of Young Guns’ alumni.

Richard Lane, a partner at Farrer & Co. said: “Since being named a Young Gun in 2006, Houlihan’s Mobile Interactive Group has ranked top of the TechTrack 100 list in 2008 and the Deloitte Technology Fast 500 in 2010, which ranks the fastest growing technology companies across 24 European countries. The company has grown to employ more than 160 and next year will top £100m in revenues with a very impressive gross profit margin. It’s a truly excellent business and he is well-deserving of our inaugural Golden Gun award.”

Distinguished history

Now in its 9th year, Young Guns has previously identified the founders of high potential companies on the path to becoming household names, including Innocent Drinks, Firebox.com, Moo, Extreme Group, and more than 200 others.

Editorial Director at Growing Business, Ian Wallis said: “While our first Young Guns list and event was a more modest affair eight years ago, the quality, diversity and uniqueness of entrepreneurial companies bursting through in the UK never ceases to astound. Starting and growing a fast-growth company is highly risky, exciting and most of all, damn hard work.

“Despite that and the backdrop of a tough economic climate, there’s no shortage of good entrepreneurs finding gaps in sizeable markets. Some will achieve incredible success as so many of our Young Guns alumni have already. They will employ copiously and help drive the economy, and some will sadly fall by the wayside. It’s very real and there’s much to be admired. This list celebrates entrepreneurial endeavour in glorious Technicolor.”

Mark Pearson: How I made 1 Million with Discount Vouchers

For lots of entrepreneurs, the day they know they’ve ‘made it’ is when they can park a Maserati or a Ferrari on their drive. But for 29-year-old Mark Pearson, the moment came when he bought his mother a house of her own. “That was a really big milestone for me because it showed I was a financial success,” says the founder of website MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, which boasts annual sales of £9m. “We lived in a council flat, which was all a bit rough. This showed that all the early risks I had to take in the business were kind of paying off.”

Brought up in Knowsley Village, Liverpool, Pearson came to London as a trainee chef under Gordon Ramsay at Claridges. He went on to run a gastropub aged 21. But, fed up with “working long hours for little pay”, he struck out on his own in 2004 – this time as a florist. “I bought a machine that wrote personalised messages on rose petals,” he says. He then introduced online digital vouchers that allowed customers to get discounts.

He rapidly realised that this was his “cheapest and best advertising platform”. Further research revealed that discount vouchers were big business in the US, where several well-established companies were giving them away online. “I thought there was perfect opportunity here. It was a no-brainer: a free-to-use discounts website where you save money.” And “boy did it take off”.

Hiring a company in India to build a “very amateurish” website for £300, Pearson launched the business from his bedroom in Wallington, south London, in November 2006. He realised that social networking sites such as MySpace and Friends Reunited were taking off, so he advertised his service on them. “We obviously caught on to the viralness and the socialness of the internet. A few people told a few more people and it snowballed. If you’ve got a good product and a good service it works wonders, because people will do the work for you.” By Christmas that year, sales of onsite advertising were pulling in £1,000 a day.

Then online retailer Play.com contacted him by email. “They said: ‘We notice you’ve got a website – we’ve got some great offers and discounts. Would you publish them and in return we’ll give you commission?’.” That’s when Pearson realised he could make more money by partnering up with these companies, rather than putting “flashy banners” on other websites. Computer group Dell signed up too, and soon Pearson was contacting others. “Every time someone clicked and purchased something via my discounts website, I would get a small commission off the purchase they made.”

It turned out to be a good business model. By the end of 2007, sales hit £1m. Growth was rapid, rising to £3m in 2008 and £9m in the year to July, as the company launched in France, Germany and the US. It now works alongside 3,500 businesses on both sides of the Atlantic, as the recession fuels enthusiasm for thrift among shoppers. “I think the recession has changed people’s outlook,” he says. British consumers in particular used to be a little embarrassed to save money, but not anymore. “Now it’s different. They’re now proud and savvy when it comes to saving money. They’ll say: ‘Look, I’ve got this two-for-one voucher – why are you paying full price?’ We’re in a whole new position now, and I don’t think it’s going to go back.”

What’s the trophy on Mark’s desk all about?

Some of you may already be aware but for those of you who aren’t, Mark Pearson and Markco Media received an accolade at the prestigious Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year awards 2011. The awards dinner for London and the South East took place on the 30th June and with Mark out of the country for his sisters wedding, the honour fell to Simon and Jon Humphrey to attend the awards evening.

Mark was selected as a winner from 54 finalists and was personally recognised as one of London and the South East’s rising entrepreneurs. Jon accepted the award on Mark’s behalf and made sure to thank the whole team at Markco Media. It is the continued hard work and enthusiasm of the team that make achievements like this possible. The judging panel were particularly impressed with our efforts to grow the business internationally and the award goes to show that the work we do on a daily basis is being recognised by the leading companies and figures in business.

Mark is now put forward to the National awards in October where we all wish him the very best of luck!

Young Entrepreneur of the Year – Winner!! http://www.markpearson.com/young-entrepreneur-of-the-year-winner/ http://www.markpearson.com/young-entrepreneur-of-the-year-winner/#comments Tue, 07 Dec 2010 13:51:21 +0000 Mark Pearson http://www.markpearson.com/?p=420 Continue reading ]]> Mark Pearson

As some of you may have read back in October I was shortlisted for the Growing Business Award’s ‘Young Entrepreneur of the Year’ 2010. I was increadibly honoured to have been shortlisted so imagine how ecstatic I was when it was announced I had won!!

The 2010 Growing Business Awards were held on November 25 at the London Marriott Grosvenor Square. I went along with a few close friends and some key people who have helped me in setting up Markco Media over the last couple of years. I was looking forward to a nice meal and a chance to meet some of the world’s greatest entrepreneurs, nothing more.

Some of the big names attending were; Phones 4U legend John Caudwell, Dragons Theo Paphitis and James Caan, Toni & Guy’s Toni Mascolo, Gerry Ford of Caffè Nero, Will “King of Shaves” King and LoveFilm’s Simon Calver.

The evening started with a speech by CBI’s new director general John Cridland and then there was a keynote speech by enterprise minister Mark Prisk.

The food was pretty special but the best part was just around the corner. Theo Paphitis was presenting the Young Entrepreneur of the Year award and started off by saying “Our future is in this room.” “They’re the people who are building businesses, paying taxes and hopefully covering our pensions!” When my name was read out as the winner I was shocked and it took me a while to realise what was going on. I made it up to the stage and still looked a bit stunned as you can see from the pictures. Apprently I modestly said “This isn’t for me, it’s for my team” which I meant wholeheartedly although I don’t remember much about the rest of the speech I gave.

Mark Pearson I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone that helped me achieve this prestigious award and also thank the CBI and Real Business for recognising my success so publicly.

Next year maybe we’ll go for the big one “Entrepreneur of the Year”!
